About B. K. Ashford
B. K. Ashford writes Christian survival thrillers about families, communities, and the difficult work of holding onto what is good when the familiar world begins to fail. His six-book series, The Unrestrained, is set in Virginia’s Blue Ridge region and begins with High Ground.
His background in law, law enforcement, and practical training shapes his interest in judgment under pressure. He is drawn to the moment when a person must act without complete information—and then live with the consequences. That interest runs through the action, the family relationships, and the disputes over authority in his fiction.
Practical experience, imperfect people
Ashford values the physical realities of a survival story: fatigue, distance, weather, limited resources, and the difference between having equipment and knowing how to use it. His characters bring experience to their problems, but they also bring blind spots. They need other people’s skills, correction, and courage.
He wants the practical lessons to grow naturally from the characters’ circumstances. A skill matters because someone needs it; a precaution earns attention because failing to take it can change a life. The result is fiction intended to engage readers who enjoy both suspense and the practical work of staying alive.
A Christian understanding of the world
The Unrestrained grows out of a Reformed Christian worldview. People bear God’s image, possess real dignity, and remain fallen. Human authority has responsibilities and limits. Mercy and justice can impose costly duties on the same person. Faith should shape what a character does when obedience becomes inconvenient.
These convictions do not make the books a promise that good people will always escape harm. They give the characters reasons to act faithfully when outcomes remain uncertain. The series explores human depravity without surrendering hope in Christ’s lordship.
Beyond reaching safety
Ashford’s interest continues after the first refuge is built. A community must decide whom to trust, how to hear disputes, how to protect vulnerable people, and how to prevent power from serving the ambitions of those who hold it. Marriage, family, work, worship, and inheritance remain part of that story.
The six books follow those concerns from the outbreak in High Ground through The Compact, The Lines, The Foundations, The Inheritance, and The Reign. Readers can begin with the first novel or explore the articles for more about the questions behind the series.
